Teaching Services

Have questions? Wondering why you would want instruction? Check out the Instruction FAQ!
THE BASICS

Over the past 10 years, I have been fortunate to teach classes in writing, composition and literature to exceptional students at Simon Fraser University, St. Paul's University (Ottawa) and the University of Ottawa. I still teach at the University of Ottawa, but I also offer instruction and curricula design to organizations and individuals on subjects related to writing, editing, composition and research.
TOPICS

I provide instruction and course design on a variety of topics. These include (but are not limited to)
  • the mechanics of writing (grammar, syntax and punctuation)
  • planning and organizing documents
  • report writing (from planning to execution)
  • basic editing
  • plain language writing
  • oral presentations
  • research methods and practices
I also am happy to create and deliver courses on related topics to suit your specific needs. Please contact me with your requirements.
CLASS SIZE AND COMPLEXITY

I am comfortable teaching classes of all sizes. Whether you are an individual who wants to learn new skills or an organization looking to provide training to a group of employees, I can help. The curriculum that I produce for each course is designed according to the size of the class and the classroom setting, but in all cases, I emphasize student participation and interactive learning.

The classes can also be as complex as you desire. I can provide an introduction to a topic, giving students an overview of some of the important issues and concepts, or I can provide instruction in its application—the choice is yours.
ONLINE DELIVERY

Most of the courses that I teach for the University of Ottawa involve elements of online content delivery, and I am happy to create courses for private clients that are either partially or wholly delivered online. Please be aware, however, that I do not have the capability to host those classes; you will need to provide your own delivery solutions.
CURRICULA DESIGN

I won't lie: I love teaching, particularly being in a classroom and interacting with students. That does not mean, however, that I won't design classes for other people to deliver. I am happy to create a curriculum that meets your needs.
ARE YOU A GOOD TEACHER?

Well, I don't like to brag...so I will let some of my former students do it for me!

    – "My favourite professor by far; he is really clear and relatable."
    – "This is by far one of the best professors I've had so far at the University of Ottawa."
    – "Lendrum is likely my favourite prof at uO and anyone would be lucky to have a class with him!"
    – "I actually love him so much! He's hilarious and makes everything interesting."

Awwww—I'm blushing!

In all seriousness, my evaluations from students are consistently very high (95% or so). I may be less demanding outside of the university classroom (I am frequently told that I am too hard by my current students), but my pedagogical style remains the same: keep it useful and keep it interesting.
